WOMEN CONCERNED BY
FIJI HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION
THE FIJI Women s Rights Movement is concerned by the conduct of the
Fiji Human Rights Commission this week.
Fiji s illegal military regime this
week appointed Rodney Acraman as the new Ombudsman and Chair of the Human Rights
Commission. The position had been
vacant since early 2006.
FWRM is concerned by the Human Rights Commission s acceptance of
the appointment in this time of national crisis. This acceptance implies a tacit
acknowledgement of the authority of the illegal
regime.
We must hold strong to the principles of democracy and the rule of
law, as enshrined in our Constitution, said FWRM Executive Director, Virisila
Buadromo.
The military is acting illegally, so it is important that we do not
acknowledge or accept any illegal appointments made by the army.
The Movement
recognises the valuable work of the Human Rights Commission, including
investigation of unlawful detention during the current crisis. However, FWRM urges the Commission to
stand by the rule of law and not accept any illegal appointments and
activities.
