COMMUNITY WORKERS TO LEARN ABOUT THE FAMILY LAW
ACT
THIRTY-THREE community workers
will next week get the chance to learn all about the Family Law Act and the
newly-established Family Court. The
Family Law Act Community Paralegal
Training, to be held at the Pacific Theological College from 22nd 26th May, is
the first segment of a two part training programme for Community Paralegals and
other community workers. The Fiji
Women s Rights Movement (FWRM) and the Pacific Regional Rights Resource Team
(RRRT) will be facilitating the training, including the second segment on
HIV/AIDS & Human Rights to be held in August.
Between 2000 and 2001, we
trained a total of 23 Community Paralegals (CPs) in human rights. The CPs have been stationed in their
respective communities, providing support to marginalised groups, and have also
helped voice their community concerns through their networks, said FWRM
Executive Director Virisila Buadromo.
This year we are again bringing
together the group of CPs and have also invited community workers from various
organisations to undertake training on the new Family Law Act, and HIV/AIDS and
human rights.
The training programmes are
geared towards building the capacity of Community Paralegals and community
workers to further train within their communities and disseminate information on
Family Law and HIV/AIDS. Their involvement means that there will be community
outreach about the new Family Court system and HIV/AIDS awareness, as well as
first-hand support for the more marginalised communities in
Fiji.
The first five-day training
session will focus on the new Family Law Act and will be conducted from
22nd 26th May. The second five-day workshop will be
conducted from 14th 18th August, on HIV/AIDS and Human
Rights.
