FWRM CONDEMNS VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

The Fiji Women’s Rights Movement strongly condemns all forms of violence against women, including the recent assault of a mother by her 22-year-old son.

“Violent incidents such as these highlight the urgent need to address gender inequality and women’s human rights in our society,” said FWRM Executive Director Virisila Buadromo.

“A woman’s role as decision-maker, within and outside of the home, needs to be recognised, acknowledged and respected.”

The Movement is currently focusing on the issue of women in decision-making in the lead up to the 2006 National Elections.  FWRM yesterday launched the WIP (Women in Politics) Appeal, a grassroots initiative to raise money for all women candidates standing in this year’s elections.

“Women’s contribution to decisions in parliament will ensure the priorities of half of the population will be reflected in national decisions – Allowing the voices of our mothers, aunties, daughters and sisters to be heard,” Buadromo said.

On the issue of violence against women, FWRM commends the lead role played by sister organisation, the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre, in advocacy, support and counselling.
