“ARSHAD DAUD NOT ASSOCIATED WITH US,” SAYS FWRM

 

December 30th 2006.

 

THE FIJI Women’s Rights Movement would like to make it clear that local businessman Arshad Daud is in no way associated with the Movement.  Mr Daud has mistakenly been associated with FWRM over the past week.  The misconception follows his detention by the military on Christmas morning, at the same time as FWRM Executive Director, Virisila Buadromo.

WOMEN CONCERNED BY FIJI HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION

THE FIJI Women s Rights Movement is concerned by the conduct of the Fiji Human Rights Commission this week.  Fiji s illegal military regime this week appointed Rodney Acraman as the new Ombudsman and Chair of the Human Rights Commission.  The position had been vacant since early 2006.

WOMEN HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS THREATENED

HUMAN rights organisations and individuals have been threatened with violence, including rape, for speaking out on the current impasse in Fiji.  The Fiji Women s Rights Movement office and FWRM Board member Imrana Jalal, received threatening phone calls last week.

NGOs say NO to possible illegal takeover: Stick to the rule of law'

The Fiji Women s Rights Movement ( FWRM) and the Pacific Centre for Public Integrity (PCPI) condemn any attempts to unlawfully remove Fiji s democratically elected government . MATERNITY PROTECTION IS A NECESSITY NOT A PRIVILEGE

Maternity protection for all women workers is a basic necessity, not a privilege, says the Fiji Women's Rights Movement.  This protection is needed for women to be able to fulfil their reproductive role in society. Society, which includes families, employers, government and the community, is responsible for creating an enabling environment where women are able to carry out this role.

THE FIJI Women's Rights Movement has expressed concern at the proposed Broadcasting Licensing Bill, which may threaten freedom of the media.  A free media is one of the foundations of democracy, and allows diverse views, including those of women and youth, to be heard by the public and  decision-makers.

THIRTY community workers and trained community paralegals will come together next week to learn about HIV/AIDS, Human Rights & the Law.  The Fiji Women's Rights Movement (FWRM) and the Pacific Regional Rights Resource Team (RRRT) will conduct the intensive training from the 14th to 18th August at the Pacific Theological College.  The training will focus on HIV/AIDS from a human rights perspective, and will analyse how this is placed in terms of Fiji s laws.

THE FIJI Women's Rights Movement is doing something a little different for International Women s Day this year.  Tomorrow morning, Wednesday March 8th , CEO for Women Emele Duituturaga will launch ¡Picture This! A photography exhibit by young women.  The ¡Picture This! project aims to explore the international Women s Day theme through the eyes of these young women, who were equipped with disposable cameras from Caines Jannif Limited.
